Professional papers of Randolph V. Whiting, Reporter of Decisions for the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal from
1917 to 1940. Materials include correspondence, notes and official reports dating from 1922 through 1940.
Background
Randolph Virginius Whiting was a native of Quincy, California. He received his early education at public schools and at Bowen's
Academy in Berkeley, California. Mr. Whiting attended the University of California at Berkeley and went on to receive his
law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1895. He was admitted to the California bar in
May 1895 and established his own private practice in San Francisco. In 1897, he began serving as an editor of the Official
Reports of decisions of the California Supreme Court. He served as an assistant district attorney of San Francisco from 1900
to 1906 and, in 1915, was appointed assistant office reporter of California Reports and California Appellate Reports. He became
the official reporter of those publications in 1917, beginning his twenty-three year term as Reporter of Decisions for the
California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal. He was also active in professional associations and civic groups and, from
1930 to 1932, served as president of the San Francisco Bar Association. In 1940, at the end of Mr. Whiting’s term as Reporter
of Decisions, Bernard E. Witkin was appointed Reporter of Decisions.
