American marine geologist Edwin Lee Hamilton was born in Sherman, Texas on December 20, 1914 and educated at Texas A&M University
(B.S., Civil Engineering, 1936) and Stanford (M.S., Geology, 1951; Ph.D. 1952). After his distinguished wartime service in
the U.S. Marine Corps, Hamilton spent most of his career as a geologist in the Sea Floor Studies Section of the Navy Electronics
Laboratory (NEL, later Naval Undersea Research and Development Center) in San Diego, California. He also participated in the
joint NEL-SIO MidPac Expedition of 1950.
