Description
Files created by Claudette Bégin documenting her involvement in organizing the Coalition of University Employees (CUE) at
the University of California (UC), particularly the Berkeley campus. General files cover statewide organizing campaigns, contract
bargaining, conferences and conventions, steering committee and executive board meeting notes, minutes and correspondence,
leadership and grievance procedure training, recognition and union officer elections, and efforts lobbying the California
legislature regarding UC funding, merit pay and employee relations. CUE Local 3 files contain a wide variety of material including
newsletters, correspondence, clippings, flyers, petitions and membership meeting notes and minutes. Events documented include
the 2002 and 2005 strikes. Specific files cover issues such as bonus and merit pay, sexual harassment, reclassifications,
anti-racism, ergonomics, health and safety, pensions, "fair share," layoffs, disability and workers compensation. Also included
are pamphlets, contract booklets, membership surveys, reports, membership lists and petitions. Additional material includes
four VHS tapes, five t-shirts and one poster (2 copies).
Background
The Coalition of University Employees (CUE) represents clerical employees within the University of California sytem. Formerly
affiliated with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) initially as Local 1695, then rechartered
as Local 3211 in 1983; CUE was founded in 1995.
